The Spanish renewable company Solatio has announced plans to develop a 4 GW solar PV project in Bom Princípio do Piauí, in the state of Piauí, in north-eastern Brazil. The power generated from the project will be used to power a planned 11.4 GW green hydrogen and green ammonia facility that will be built in the Free Export Zone (EPZ) of Parnaíba, also located in the state of Piauí.
The project, which will require an investment of around BRL10.3bn (US$1.94bn), is set to become Brazil’s largest solar power plant. The first phase of the project, with a capacity of 3 GW, is expected to be built from mid-2025 to 2028. The announcement of the project came as Solatio signed a memorandum of understanding for the construction of the plant with the Government of Piauí.
As of end 2023, solar represented 16% of Brazil’s installed capacity with 37 GW and about 7% of its power generation with 49 TWh. The country currently has over 8 GW of solar capacity under construction and nearly 61 GW under development.
