The Ecuadorian Government has signed an agreement with the Spanish energy company Solarpack for the construction and operation of a 200 MW solar power plant, which will be located in the El Aromo area of the Manabi province (western Ecuador).
The El Aromo solar plant, which will be Ecuador’s largest, will require an investment of nearly US$150m and is expected to become operational by 2025. Solarpack will provide the investment and have the concession for 20 years. The project will generate enough electricity to supply about 60% of the population of the city of Manta, Manabi, which amounts to about 650,000 people. In September 2022, Solarpack had already signed a concession contract agreement with Ecuador’s Ministry of Energy and Mining for the El Aromo solar plant.
In 2021, Ecuador had only 28 MW of installed solar capacity (less than 1% of its total installed capacity), generating about 38 GWh of electricity. Nearly 300 MW of solar projects are currently under development in the country.
