Solar + BESS project reaches FID on in South Africa (300 MW /660 MWh) 

SOLA Group has reached an FID on its 300 MW /660 MWh Naos-1 project near Viljoenskroon in South Africa’s Free State province (Sasol press release, 09/02/2026). The project is a hybrid solar + BESS plant that should allow for power to be stored and dispatched during peak demand periods, ensuring a reliable supply of electricity to industrial customers.  SOLA Group has already secured PPA’s with Sasol and Air Liquide, and the project is also backed by local financial institutions such as the Development Bank of Southern Africa. SOLA Build and WBHO will oversee the construction of the project, with commercial operations scheduled for H1 2028

According to SOLA Group’s chief commercial officer, the project is aligned with the company’s targets of 2 GW solar capacity and 5 GWh storage capacity by 2030.
