The Italian gas grid operator Snam has published its 2023-2027 Strategic Plan, in which it plans to invest €11.5bn in the next four years, a 15% increase compared to its previous plan (€10bn over the 2022-2026 period).
The plan includes a €10.3bn investment in infrastructure, of which €7.4 dedicated to transport (including the upgrading of the Adriatic backbone, the replacement of 900 km of gas pipeline, connection of FSRUs and biomethane plants and construction of dual-fuel compressor stations), €1.4bn for gas storage sites expansion and upgrading, and €1.5bn for the development of LNG projects. The remaining €1.2bn are destined for investments on the commissioning of biomethane plants to achieve an overall capacity of 80 MW (€400m), the development of CO2 transport and storage infrastructure (€350m), to boost the hydrogen business (€100m, of which €20m are destined in the engineering phase of the SoutH2 Corridor) and to develop a solid pipeline of energy performance contracts and renovation projects (€300m).
The SoutH2 Corridor is a project led by transmission system operators (TSOs) Snam, TAG, GCA, and Bayernet that aims to provide Italy, Germany, and Austria with improved access to natural gas and hydrogen through a 3,300 km pipeline connected to the existing Trans-Mediterranean pipeline that links Italy and North Africa. The corridor, which is expected to be fully operational by 2030, has the potential to import 4 Mt/year of hydrogen from North Africa and is expected to help Snam to achieve its net-zero target by 2050.
