Slovenia extends the 688 MW Krško nuclear plant lifespan by 20 years to 2043

Slovenia’s Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning has granted an environmental permit to extend the lifespan of the 688 MW Krško nuclear power plant by 20 years to 2043. The Krško power plant, located in eastern Slovenia near the border with Croatia, is the country’s only nuclear plant. It is co-owned by Croatia’s Hrvatska Elektroprivreda (HEP) and Slovenia’s GEN Energija.

The Krško power plant, which comprises one reactor, began construction in 1975. It was connected to the grid in October 1981 and went into commercial operation in January 1983. The plant was developed jointly by Slovenia and Croatia, which were at the time part of Yugoslavia.

At the end of 2020, nuclear power represented 18% of Slovenia’s installed capacity and 37% of its power generation with 6.4 TWh.
