The Slovakian Government has approved the extension into 2025 of a scheme capping residential electricity prices in Slovakia, in order to limit the impact of the price increases of the past years on consumers. Under the plan, electricity prices for household will be capped at €61/MWh (not considering distribution and other related fees), cancelling a previously announced rise to €66.7/MWh. Slovak households are expected to save more than €267m/year on electricity supply compared to market prices.
In 2022, the Government reached an agreement with national power utility SE to guarantee stable electricity prices for households until 2024, with SE supplying 6.15 TWh/year at the price of €61/MWh excluding VAT for households, hospitals, social services homes, and schools. In 2023, the government decided to cap the increase of energy prices for households in 2023 with a €6bn package, keeping residential prices for electricity unchanged and raising prices for natural gas and heat by 15%. The Government considers the prices have not gone down enough to revoke the initiative yet.
