Slovakia takes over Gabcikovo hydro power plant from Enel

The Slovak state has won a legal dispute with national power utility Slovenské Elektrárne (SE) over the validity of the contract on the operation of the Gabčíkovo hydropower plant. The hydropower plant is owned by Vodohospodárska vystavba (VV) and operated by Slovenské elektrárne, with 65% of the plant-related revenues going to VV and 35% to SE. In total, 12 actions have been filed against Slovenske Elektrarne in relation to the plant. The Regional Court in Bratislava has decided that the contract on operation of the Gabčíkovo hydropower plant was invalid, as a public tender should have been organised instead of signing a direct agreement with SE. State-run Vodohospodárska Vystavba (VV) will now operate the hydropower plant and sell generated electricity. In addition, SE would have to repay all the money generated by the plant, i.e. €35-40m/year. The company will appeal this decision.

Slovenské Elektrárne has been 66%-owned by Italian power utility Enel since 2005. In July 2014, Enel announced the upcoming sale of its controlling interest in SE, as part of a €6bn debt reduction programme.
