The Slovakian government has approved a plan to build a new nuclear reactor with a capacity of up to 1.2 GW at the Jaslovske Bohunice site (western Slovakia), which is already home to the country’s existing Jaslovske Bohunice nuclear power plant. The government has tasked its economy and finance ministries to draw up a plan for the new plant by the end of October 2024, which will include a selection process for a supplier as well as timing and financing of the project.
Slovakia currently has five operational nuclear units: two 466 MW reactors in Jaslovske Bohunice (since 1985), three reactors in Mochovce (units 1 and 2 of 468 MW each commissioned in 1998-1999, and unit 3 of 440 MW, commissioned in 2023). At the end of 2022, nuclear represented 26% of Slovakia’s installed capacity with over 2 GW (stable in 2023) and 59% of the country’s power generation with nearly 16 TWh.
