Slovakia's power utility Slovenské Elektrárne has connected Unit 4 of the Mochovce nuclear power plant to the electricity grid, according to a statement by the country’s main utility (Slovenské elektrárne press release, 15/10/2026).
“The phasing took place at 20% of the reactor's power. We phased in the first of the two turbogenerators. The first of the unit’s two turbine generators was connected to the grid. Unit 4 has a total installed electrical capacity of 471 MW and, once fully operational, is expected to generate around 3.5 TWh/year of electricity, which corresponds to approximately 13% of Slovakia's current consumption”, according to the statement.
The grid connection of Unit 4 at the Mochovce nuclear power plant was delayed by a few days. It is the final unit to enter service at the country’s second nuclear power plant, following the connection of Unit 3 in 2023.
Slovenské elektrárne operates Slovakia’s five nuclear units, with a combined installed capacity of more than 2 GW. As the country’s largest electricity producer, the company accounts for 66% of total domestic electricity generation. Nuclear power represents 1/4 of Slovakia’s total installed power generation capacity and over 60% of its power mix.
Slovakia also intends to develop a new, fully state-owned nuclear power plant. In late 2025, the Slovak government approved an agreement with the United States to construct a 1 GW nuclear reactor at the existing Jaslovské Bohunice power plant (Enerdata Global Energy Research).
