Slovakia’s government has approved an agreement with the United States to construct a new nuclear reactor. The reactor will be built at the existing Jaslovské Bohunice nuclear power plant in western Slovakia. With a planned capacity of over 1 GW, the project will be fully state-owned. However, it remains unclear when the agreement between the two governments will be formally signed.
While few additional details were disclosed, the Slovak government had previously approved a plan in 2024 for a 1.2 GW reactor at the same site, where the main utility, Slovenské Elektrárne, currently operates two nuclear units. Although the government initially intended to launch a public tender to select a contractor, it recently announced that it is now in direct negotiations with the US-based company Westinghouse.
Nuclear energy plays a major role in Slovakia’s energy mix, accounting for 61% of the country’s electricity generation in 2024.
