Slight increase in CO2 emissions from energy use in Europe in 2015

According to preliminary estimates released by Eurostat, CO2 emissions from fuel combustion in the European Union increased slightly (by 0.7%) in 2015.

CO2 emissions rose in a majority of countries, with especially significant increases in Hungary (+6.7%), Portugal (+8.6%, lower hydropower generation) and Slovakia (+9.5%). Emissions increased in some large emitting countries, such as Italy (+3.5%, accounting for 10.6% of total CO2 emissions in the European Union in 2015), France (+1.7% to 9.9% of total emissions), Poland (+1.6% to 9.2% of total emissions), Spain (+2.3% to 7.4% of total emissions) or the Netherlands (+2.1% to 5.1% of total emissions) but they remained stable in Germany, the largest emitter with 23% of total emissions in 2015, and even declined by 2.9% in the United Kingdom (12.5% of total emissions in 2015). CO2 emissions declined in eight countries, with significant falls in Greece (-5%), Finland (-7.4%), Denmark (-9.9%), Estonia (-16%) and Malta (-27%).
