SkyPower and AFC partner to develop a 1 GW solar project in the Congo DR

The Investment company Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) has partnered with the Canadian company SkyPower to develop the 1 GW Green Giant solar project in the Democratic Republic of Congo (Congo DR). Both parties have entered a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) for the first phase of the project. The 200 MW Phase 1 is an important step in realising the 1 GW solar Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) signed between SkyPower and the DRC’s state-owned utility, Société Nationale d’Electricité (SNEL). Construction is expected to begin in 2025.

The solar project was first announced in 2020, at the same time as the signing of the PPA with SNEL, however, no concrete announcement had been made concerning this initiative since then. The new partnership with AFC thus aims to unlock the development process.

As of end-2022, the Congo DR only had about 20 MW of solar capacity, out of a total installed capacity of 2.9 GW.
