The Australian renewable energy company Skylab Group plans to build an 800 MW AC (960 MW DC) solar farm, accompanied by a 250 MW/250 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), near the city of Toowoomba, in the Australian state of Queensland. Skylab plans to develop the solar project in two phases, on a 1,345 hectare site near the town of Millmerran, part of the South West Queensland Renewable Energy Zone.
Construction of the first 400 MW phase of the Punch’s Creek Renewable Project (which will also include the BESS) is expected to start in 2024 and take about 18 months. The second phase of the project will later add a further 400 MW of solar. Skylab has already filed a development application with the Toowoomba Regional Council, which is expected to communicate a decision on the project by the end of March 2023.
Skylab also plans to build the 400 MW AC/480 MW DC Springvale Renewable Energy Project, with 100 MWh of battery energy storage and hydrogen capacity, in the North Queensland Renewable Energy Zone.
At the end of 2021, solar represented 23% of Australia’s installed capacity with 19 GW and 10.5% of its power generation with 28 TWh.
