Skyborn secures rights for a 2 GW offshore wind project in Sweden

The Swedish renewable energy company Skyborn Renewables and the Finnish state-owned forest company Metsähallitus have entered into a reservation agreement granting 5-year exclusive rights to develop the over 2 GW Pooki offshore wind project in the Bothnian Bay off northern Finland. The project will include around 100 turbines and development works are expected to start in August 2023.

Skyborn Renewables is currently developing four other offshore wind projects in Sweden totalling 10.7 GW: 3.9 GW Eystrasalt Offshore off Hudiksvall (expected in 2032), 3 GW Polargrund Offshore off Kalix (no commissioning date so far), 2.8 GW Fyrskeppet Offshore off Uppsala (2030), and 1 GW Storgrundet Offshore off Gävle and Söderhamn (2029).

Sweden has issued a roadmap for a transition to an entirely renewable electricity system (100% renewable electricity production) by 2040. In 2021, the country had 203 MW of installed offshore wind capacity and nearly 12 GW of onshore wind (over 14 GW in 2022 according to preliminary estimates).
