Skyborn receives approval for a 2.8 GW offshore wind project in Sweden

The County Administrative Board of Uppsala (Sweden) has given its approval to Skyborn Renewables for the development of a 2.8 GW offshore wind project, located in Sweden’s Gulf of Bothnia. The Fyrskeppet offshore wind project will comprise up to 187 wind turbine and have a production capacity of up to 11 TWh/year. The project area is approximately 488 km2 and is located approximately 50 km north of Örskär in Uppsala County.

In 2023, Skyborn Renewables had submitted a permit application to the government for the construction, operation, and decommissioning of the project. In addition, the developer also submitted a permit application to the County Administrative Board of Uppsala. Skyborn Renewables is also developing the 765 MW Storgrundet, the 3.9 GW Eystrasalt, and the 1.8 GW Polargrund offshore wind projects in Sweden.

At the end of 2023, Sweden only had 193 MW of installed offshore wind capacity (against over 16 GW of onshore wind capacity). The country aims to reach an entirely "fossil-free" electricity system by 2040.
