Sites agreed for 4 new nuclear reactors in South Korea

Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power (KHNP) has signed an agreement with the Ulchin county in South Korea, paving the way for the construction of two new nuclear power plants at Shin Hanul (Shin Hanul-3 and 4); in turn, KHNP will provide the county with Won 280bn (US$250m) for local infrastructures. The site already hosts six reactors at the 5.9 GW Hanul nuclear plant, which were commissioned between 1988 and 2005. KHNP plans to add four new reactors (Shin Hanul power project); the first two units, rated 1,350 MW each, are under construction and should be commissioned in 2018. Shin Hanul-3 and 4 are expected to enter construction in 2017 at the earliest with commissioning in 2022.

In addition, the Yeongdeok county has signed an agreement for the siting of a new two-unit plant and will receive Won 1,500 bn (US$1.3bn). The construction of the new reactors could start by 2022.
