Sinopec starts production at the 2 bcm/year West Sichuan gas field project (China)

The Chinese state-owned oil and gas company Sinopec has begun production at a natural gas field in the Sichuan province (southwestern China), which has a production capacity of 2 bcm/year. The West Sichuan gas field project has total estimated gas reserves of 100 bcm. In addition, the field is also expected to produce 130 kt/year of sulfur. West Sichuan is Sinopec's third gas field in the Sichuan Basin with more than 100 bcm in reserves.

In January 2024, China’s Ministry of Natural Resources certified 133 bcm of proved reserves of natural gas at a Sinopec development in the Sichuan basin, after the company drilled 21 new exploration wells at the Hexingchang field near the cities of Deyang and Mianyang.

Sinopec produced 1,249 bcf (35.3 bcm) of natural gas in 2022, a 4% increase compared to 2021 (1,199 bcf). Its gas reserves stood at 8,806 bcf (249 bcm), a 4% increase year-on-year. At the national level, China’s proved natural gas reserves stood at 2,887 bcm at the end of 2022 and gas production surpassed 219 bcm the same year.
