SINOPEC plans to boost Arzew refinery production to 1.2 Mt/year (Algeria)

Algeria’s national oil and gas company SONATRACH and the Chinese company SINOPEC Guangzhou Engineering (a subsidiary of Sinopec Group) have signed a contract for the construction of a CCR-type hydrotreating and reforming unit to process heavy naphtha at the Arzew refinery in Algeria (Sonatrach press release, 17/11/2025).

  • Under the EPCC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Commissioning) agreement, the unit will be built by SINOPEC Guangzhou Engineering
  • The project is expected to be completed within 30 months.

With a processing capacity of 738,000 t/year of heavy naphtha, the hydrotreating and reforming unit will increase the refinery’s gasoline production capacity from 550 kt/year to 1.2 Mt/year, thereby boosting the national gasoline production capacity, in line with SONATRACH's refining sector development plan.
