The Chinese oil and gas group Sinopec has announced a new gas discovery in the Sichuan basin, southwestern China, which boosted gas reserves at the basin’s northern field to over 100 bcm. With the latest discovery adding 55.16 bcm of proven natural gas reserves, the Tongnanba gas field now boasts total reserves of 106.6 bcm. The discovery was certified by China’s Ministry of Natural Resources.
In January 2024, China’s Ministry of Natural Resources had certified 133 bcm of proved reserves of natural gas at a Sinopec development in the Sichuan basin, after the company drilled 21 new exploration wells at the Hexingchang field near the cities of Deyang and Mianyang. Sinopec began production at the 2 bcm/year western Sichuan gas field in March 2024.
Sinopec produced 1,249 bcf (35.3 bcm) of natural gas in 2022, a 4% increase compared to 2021 (1,199 bcf). Its gas reserves stood at 8,806 bcf (249 bcm), a 4% increase year-on-year.
