Singapore's updated NDC targets 45-50 MtCO2eq in GHG emissions by 2035

Singapore has released its updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) for the January 2031 to December 2035 period. Singapore intends to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to between 45 to 50 MtCO2e in 2035, a more ambitious goal from the 60 MtCO2e set to be achieved by 2030. To do so, the country aims to phase out unabated coal from its electricity mix by 2040 and maximise the deployment of solar PV to achieve at least 2 GW by 2030 (about 3% of Singapore’s projected energy needs). Singapore also raised its clean energy import target from 4 GW to around 6 GW by 2035. Another strategy explored by the country to reduce emissions is CCS in hard-to-abate sectors; through the Sustainable Jurong Island plan, Singapore plans to avoid the emission of approximately 2 MtCO2/year by 2030. To achieve its 2050 goal to achieve net-zero emissions, the country also expects to start a project for ammonia power generation and marine bunkering as part of its National Hydrogen Strategy.

Singapore’s updated NDC was prepared considering its national circumstances, challenges and opportunities for mitigation. Studies and technology roadmaps, developed in collaboration and consultation with industry stakeholders, academic experts and technical consultants, served as additional input on the mitigation potential of key technologies.
