Singapore approves 1.75 GW power import from Australia’s SunCable project

The Singaporean regulator Energy Market Authority (EMA) has granted conditional approval to the Australian group SunCable to import 1.75 GW of low-carbon electricity from Australia to Singapore. Power would be generated by SunCable’s solar project located in Australia’s Northern Territory, which could produce up to 6 GW, including 4 GW for the city of Darwin and up to 2 GW for export to Singapore via a 4,300 km subsea cable (the Australia-Asia PowerLink transmission project).

In 2024, the project received several approvals in Australia, including from the Australian Government under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (EPBC), the Northern Territory Government and the NT Environment Protection Authority. A Final Investment Decision (FID) on the project is expected in 2027 with electricity supply to start in the early 2030s.

So far, EMA has granted 2 GW of Conditional Licences for electricity imports from Indonesia, as well as 3.6 GW of Conditional Approvals for electricity imports (1.4 GW from Indonesia, 1 GW from Cambodia and 1.2 GW from Vietnam).
