The renewable energy company Simply Blue Group, alongside its partners Subsea7 and Australia’s Spark Renewables, has unveiled plans to develop a 2 GW floating offshore wind project in Australia’s newly declared Hunter wind zone off the Hunter in New South Wales (NSW) (Australia).
The Sea Fern project is currently at the inception phase of applying for a Feasibility Licence under Australia’s Offshore Electricity Infrastructure Act of 2021. Depending on the necessary authorisations and studies, the project would start to be built by 2030, and expected operations of the wind park would run through to the 2060’s.
Earlier in July 2023, the Australian government selected the 1,800 km2 Hunter offshore wind zone in the Pacific Ocean, which has the potential to generate up to 5 GW of energy.
New South Wales targets 12 GW of renewable capacity by 2030. At the national level, as of end-2021, Australia had nearly 9 GW of wind capacity (100% onshore).
