Siemens wins orders for two offshore wind projects (Germany, UK)

Siemens has won large turbine orders for two offshore wind projects in Germany and in the United Kingdom. The company has won a €650m order to supply 67 of its 6-MW turbines for a 400 MW offshore wind project in the German North Sea, Veja Mate, developed by the Laidlaw Energy Group (acquired from Bard in 2014). The first turbines will be installed in March 2017 and Siemens will offer services over a 15-year period.

In addition, Danish energy utility DONG Energy has ordered Siemens's 7 MW offshore wind turbines for the 330 MW Walney Extension Offshore Wind project. The extension project will be developed in two 330 MW stages: MHI Vestas Offshore Wind will supply 8-MW turbines for the first stage, while Siemens will supply 7-MW turbines for the second stage. Walney Extension has already been awarded a contract for difference under the EMR FID-enabling regime and, in November 2014, the project was granted consent by the British Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change. Construction may start in 2017. Final investment decision is still pending.
