South Korea's national nuclear group Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power (KHNP) has connected to the grid the second unit of the Shin Wolsong nuclear power plant. Commissioning is expected in July 2015. The construction of the 960 MW (1,000 MW gross) OPR-1000 reactor started in 2008 and was completed in 2013 but the falsified documentation scandal prompted South Korea's Nuclear Safety and Security Commission (NSSC) to suspend the reactor's commissioning.
In addition, the NSSC has approved KHNP's plans to restart 679 MW Wolsong-1, the second oldest reactor of South Korea (commissioned in 1983) that was shut down in 2012 after reaching the end of its 30-year lifespan. The reactor will be restarted in April 2015 and will operate until 2022. The lifetime of the oldest reactor (Kori-1) was extended by 10 years to 2017.
In January 2014, recabling works were completed at three reactors, Shin Kori-1 and 2 and Shin Wolsong-1, and the units were authorised to restart.
