The third unit of the Shin Kori nuclear power plant developed by South Korean energy group Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) has reached first criticality. Shin Kori-3 is the first Korean-designed Advanced Pressurised Reactor-1400 (APR-1400, rated 1,340 MW net) to start up.
The construction of the reactor started in October 2008 on the site of the existing Shin Kori nuclear plant and fuel loading began in November 2015. The Nuclear Safety and Security Commission has issued an operating license, paving the way for the the reactor's commissioning. KHNP will start commissioning tests and the 1,400 MW reactor should enter commercial operation in mid-2016.
The existing Shin Kori plant consists of two operational OPR-1000 reactors (950 MW net, 1,000 MW gross) that were commissioned in 2011 and 2012, respectively. Two APR-1,400 reactors (1,350 MW net, 1,400 MW gross) have been built on the site and are expected to start up in mid 2016 and early 2017, respectively. Two further APR-1,400 reactors are planned on the site.
