Shell takes FID for the 5.7 bcm/year Crux gas project in Western Australia

Shell and its joint venture partner, SGH Energy, have taken a final investment decision (FID) to approve the development of the Crux natural gas field, off the coast of Western Australia. The development will consist of a platform operated remotely from Prelude. Five wells will be drilled initially, and an export pipeline will connect the platform to Prelude, which is around 160 km to the south-west of Crux. The project will have the capacity to supply the Prelude floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility with up to 550 mcf/d of gas (5.7 bcm/year). Construction will start in 2022 and first gas is expected in 2027. The Prelude FLNG facility, located in Browse Basin, was commissioned in 2019 and has a liquefaction capacity of 5.3 Mt/year (7.3 bcm/year).
