Shell plans to double Hazira LNG capacity up to 10 Mt/y (India)

Shell announced it will increase the Hazira LNG regasification facility (Gujarat State, India) capacity up to 10 Mt/y but did not publish any timeline for the project.

In April 2015, Shell already unveiled plans to boost the regasification capacity of the Hazira LNG import terminal on the west coast of India by 50% during the fiscal year 2016-2017 (April 2016-March 2017).

The Hazira LNG project was commissioned in 2005 with a capacity of 2.5 Mt/year and expanded to 3.6 Mt/year in 2008 and to 5 Mt/year in 2013. Shell owns a 74% stake in the terminal, in partnership with Total (26%), and a 26% stake in the Kakinada LNG project on the Indian east coast.

India is seeking to improve its gas supply, in a context of decline in the domestic gas production from Reliance's KG-D6 block. So far, the country has a total regasification capacity of 25 Mt/year (nearly 34 bcm/year). More than 36 Mt/year (49 bcm/year) of new capacities have already been approved and could be operational by 2020.
