Shell joins consortium to develop an energy island with 10 GW of wind (Denmark)

The British oil and gas company Shell has officially joined the VindØ Consortium, which aims to create an artificial energy island in the Danish North Sea that will have the potential to deliver up to 10 GW of offshore wind. The announcement follows the Memorandum of Understanding which Shell signed in June 2022 to join the consortium.

The other consortium partners are PensionDanmark and PFA, two of Denmark’s largest pension funds, and Andel, Denmark’s largest utility company, as well as Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP). The island will be able to connect 10 GW of offshore wind to Denmark and other neighbouring countries. It will also host an innovation zone with potential for large-scale Power-to-X production and energy storage. It would include accommodation and operation and maintenance services from onsite harbour facilities. A partnership agreement has been signed with DEME, Boskalis, and MT Højgaard to develop the island. The Danish Energy Agency will organise a tender for the construction of the island and the winner is expected to be nominated in 2024.
