CrossWind, a joint venture between Shell (79.9%) and Eneco (20.1%), has started building the 759 MW Hollandse Kust Noord offshore wind project in the Netherlands. In July 2020, CrossWind won the tender for the project, located off Egmond aan Zee. The subsidy-free project is expected to be operational in 2023. The wind project would generate 3.3 TWh/year of renewable electricity.
In February 2021, Eneco and Shell signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Amazon to provide 380 MW of electricity from the wind project. Shell will provide 250 MW and Eneco will provide 130 MW, starting in 2024. The same month, the consortium executed a contract with Siemens Gamesa, which will supply 9 SG 11.0-200 DD turbines for the project.
At the end of 2021, the Netherlands had 2.5 GW of offshore wind plants, representing about 6% of the country’s installed capacity. Offshore wind represented around 4% of the country’s generation mix with 5.3 TWh.
