Shell and AMPYR will build a 500 MW battery storage system in NSW (Australia)

Shell Energy Australia, a subsidiary of Shell, and AMPYR Australia, an affiliate of Singapore’s AMPYR, have signed an agreement to develop and build a 500 MW/1 GWh battery energy storage system (BESS), which will be located in Wellington, in Australia’s New South Wales (NSW) state. The construction is expected to begin in mid-2023, subject to all relevant approvals and financing. The Wellington BESS will connect to the adjacent TransGrid Wellington substation, adjacent to the Central West Orana Renewable Energy Zone (REZ). It will complement nearby existing renewable energy generation assets as well as the proposed additional generation to be delivered as part of the REZ.

Simultaneously, Shell Energy Operations, another subsidiary of Shell, has entered into a 50/50 joint partnership with Foresight Group to acquire the Kondinin Energy project, which is located about 245 km east of Perth (Western Australia) and comprises 370 MW of assets at various stages of development. The assets include two wind parks totaling 235 MW, a 125 hectares solar park with up to 80 MW of capacity and a 60 MW/120 MWh BESS. Pending a final investment decision, construction of the 121 MW first wind park is expected to begin in 2024.
