SGRE will supply turbines for Dominion's 2.6 GW offshore wind project (US)

Dominion Energy has confirmed a conditional order for Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy's (SGRE's) 14 MW offshore wind turbines for its 2,640 MW Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project off the coast of Virginia in the United States. Dominion Energy had already selected SGRE as the preferred turbine supplier for the project in January 2020. The order is subject to some conditions, including final investment decision (FID), governmental permitting, and other required approvals, and the number of turbines to be deployed will depend on project site conditions. The turbine installation is expected to be completed by 2026.

Dominion secured an offshore lease from the US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) in 2013. The group will install two 6 MW SGRE turbines within a research lease area adjacent to the CVOW site, start ocean survey work in 2020 and incorporate it into the project's Construction and Operations Plan (COP) that will be submitted to the BOEM in late 2020.

The Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project is part of Dominion's clean energy strategy, which aims to cut CO2 emissions from the company's power plants by 55% by 2030 and by 80% by 2050; the company is investing in solar and wind, battery storage, pumped hydroelectric storage and other resources that can support intermittent solar and wind generation. In addition, the CVOW project is expected to help the state of Virginia meet its target to produce 100% of its electricity from renewables by 2045.
