SGE has applied under the UK’s Advanced Nuclear Framework to develop a 4.2 GW SMR fleet across three sites in the United Kingdom (SGE press release, 02/07/2026). The fleet is composed of 14 units of GE Vernova’s Hitachi BWRX-300 SMR units, with a capacity of about 300 MW each. The first site would host six units (1.8 GW), with two further sites to follow in quick succession.
The GBP35bn (EUR40.9bn) project is being developed by SGE, GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy, Samsung C&T, Laing O’Rourke, Aecon Group, Google Cloud, Fermi Development, Etara and an experienced nuclear operator. The proposal aims to support energy security and low-carbon generation, with output equivalent to around 11% of UK electricity demand.
It is expected to enter the Advanced Nuclear Pipeline in late 2026, with site selection and support mechanisms targeted in 2027 and first operations expected around 2034.
SGE is developing partnerships and projects in over six European countries, with its flagship investment underway in Poland in collaboration with ORLEN across three sites, and first operations targeted for 2032.
