SGCC commissions a 732 km, 1,000-kV UHVAC transmission line in northern China

State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) has commissioned a 1,000-kV ultra-high voltage alternative current (UHVAC) transmission project, which runs between the Inner Mongolia Province (northern China) and the Hebei Province (north-eastern China).

The 732 km Zhangbei-Shengli transmission project will be able to transmit 70 TWh/year of electricity between the Xilingol region (Inner Mongolia) and Zhangjiakou (Hebei), delivering power to the Beijing, Tianjin and Shandong Provinces. The CNY6.8bn (US$958m) project is a key project of China’s “14th Five-Year-Plan”, according to SGCC.

In January 2024, State Grid announced that it would invest CNY500bn (US$70bn) in grid network construction in 2024 to develop UHV lines, ensure power supply stability and boost renewable power consumption in China. State Grid expects to complete six UHV AC lines in 2024 and start several new UHV projects.
