The UAE’s Sharjah Electricity, Water, and Gas Authority (SEWA) and Sharjah Hamriyah Independent Power Company (Shipco), alongside GE Vernova (a subsidiary of the US’ General Electric), have started commercial operations of all three blocks at the 1.8 GW Hamriyah CCGT Independent Power Plant, located near the city of Sharjah, in northern United Arab Emirates.
The newly commissioned CCGT power plant, consisting of three GE Vernova 9HA.01 turbines, is said to use more efficient technology and would be able generate 1.8 GW of power with up to 4 MtCO2/year fewer carbon dioxide emissions when compared to generating the same amount of electricity with older technology.
Gas-fired power generation still dominates the UAE’s power mix. As of end-2021, gas represented 83% of the UAE’s installed capacity with more than 35 GW, and 83% of its power generation.
