Serbia has released its updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) for the period up to 2035, setting a conditional economy-wide greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction target of 40.1% by 2035, compared to 1990 and excluding the land use, land use change and forestry sector (LULUCF). Serbia indicates that this reduction target is temporary - until the adoption of new targets for 2040 as part of the process of developing the new Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP), in accordance with the requirements of the relevant climate legislation of the European Union - and conditional, depending on the available financial resources for the implementation of the process of just and energy transition by 2035.
In its previsous NDC covering the 2021-2030 period, the GHG emission reduction target had been set at 13.2% by 2030 compared to 2010, corresponding to a 33.3% reduction compared to 1990. In its NECP (2024), Serbia raised its GHG emission reduction target by 2030 to 40.3% (compared to 1990 levels). The Low Carbon Development Strategy for 2023-2030, with projections until 2050 (2023), indicated a reduction target of 55-69% by 2050 compared to 2010.
