Serbia plans to develop five solar projects (1 GW) with battery systems

Serbia is planning to develop five solar power plants across the country with a combined capacity of 1 GW, along with a minimum of 200 MW/400 MWh battery energy storage capacity. The Serbian government is currently seeking a strategic partner to develop these projects. The government wants the projects to be developed, built and handed over to the Serbian state-owned utility Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS) on turnkey basis after two years of operation. Serbia wants this capacity to come online within four to five years, while the partner will be contracted for six to seven years.

In January 2023, EPS announced plans to install 4 GW of new renewable capacity over the next 15 years, to reach 7 GW in 2038. As of end-2021, Serbia had less than 400 MW of wind power and only 52 MW of installed solar capacity, representing less than 6% of its total capacity. The country, which commissioned its largest solar plant yet (10 MW) in April 2023, currently has 1.8 GW of solar and 5.5 GW of wind capacity under development.
