Senegal's FONSIS sovereign fund aims to build a 500 MW gas-fired power plant

Senegal's Sovereign Fund for Strategic Investments (FONSIS) is looking for a co-investor to develop a 500 MW gas-fired power plant in Senegal. The project aims to reinforce the country's "energy sovereignty and security", as well as "utilize its gas ressources".

The partnership will cover the engineering, construction, testing phase, exploitation and maintenance of the power plant, which will be operated through an Independent Power Producer (IPP) model by a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV). The national electricity company, SENELEC, will be the sole buyer of power from the plant though a power purchase agreement (PPA).

Senegal published its "Gas-to-Power" strategy in 2018 and started extracting natural gas in 2024.
