Senegal's 154 MW PETN wind project starts generating power

The 154 MW Parc Éolien Taiba N’Diaye (PETN) project has been connected to Senegal’s national electricity grid to provide its first power. The project is being developed by the Lekela joint venture (60% Actis and 40% Mainstream Renewable Power). The JV brought around half of the total investment of US$342m, completed by the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) and EKF. Construction of the power plant has started in February 2019. Commissioning is now scheduled to take place by end-2020.

The PETN project forms part of Plan Senegal Emergent, the government’s economic development accelerator programme. The government of Senegal has set a target of 15% renewable energy in energy consumption by 2020 and 30% in the electricity production.

In October 2019, Lekela has officially launched the construction of the 250 MW West Bakr Wind project near Ras Ghareb in Egypt. The project is expected to be fully operational in 2021.
