The government of the Saint-Louis region in northern Senegal has announced plans to develop a new 250 MW gas-fired power plant in Gandon. The power plant will be supplied with gas from the gas pipeline managed by the Réseau Gazier du Sénégal (RGS) and is expected to start producing power in the first quarter of 2026, provided the gas pipeline is operational before the end of 2025. The power plant’s capacity could possibly be extended to 500 MW in a later phase.
The new power plant was announced as Senegal is poised to join the club of gas producing countries, thanks to the development of the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) field located offshore Mauritania and Senegal.
As of end-2022, gas represented 17% of Senegal’s installed capacity with 306 MW (stable in 2023) and less than 1% of its power generation, far below oil (representing 45% of the country’s capacity and 79% of its power generation).
