Senegal enters a Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP)

A Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) has been launched by Senegal and the International Partners Group (IPG), which includes France, Germany, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and Canada, with the objectives to assist the country in its efforts to attain universal access to energy and establish a resilient and sustainable energy system with a low-carbon footprint.

This cooperation aims to help accelerate the deployment of renewable energy sources, with the goal of raising the share of renewable energy in Senegal's power capacity mix to 40% by 2030. More than €2.5bn in new and additional financing over an initial period of 3 to 5 years are expected to be mobilised by international partners and multilateral development banks, starting in 2023.

Senegal’s electrification rose from 57% in 2010 to 74% in 2021. The country’s installed capacity stood at 1.6 GW at end-2021, with 29% of renewables, including 15% of solar. Around 70% of the capacity currently under construction and half of the capacity under development at the moment is thermal.
