BP has started producing LNG from the 2.3 Mt/year Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) LNG project located offshore Mauritania and Senegal. In late December 2024, gas from the first phase of GTA started to flow from wells to the floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel located approximately 40 km offshore. Gas has now been delivered to the floating LNG vessel located 10 km offshore and liquefaction has commenced.
BP is operator of GTA with a 56% stake, alongside Kosmos Energy (27%), Petrosen (10%) and SMH (7%). The Gimi FLNG vessel, which liquefies GTA gas, is owned and operated by Golar LNG. In February 2023, BP, Kosmos Energy, Petrosen and SMH agreed to move forward with the second phase of the project, which is expected to have a capacity 2.5-3 Mt/year. Until then, only three countries in Sub-Saharan Africa were producing LNG: Nigeria (17 Mt), Angola (4 Mt) and Cameroon (2 Mt).
