The US LNG company Sempra has started pre-commissioning activities on its Energia Costa Azul LNG export terminal in Baja California, Mexico. The US$2.5bn project has already achieved mechanical completion of various subsystems, reaching a 92% completion and is expecting to start commercial operations in the spring 2026. The project is being developed in phases, with the first one seeking to produce around 3 Mt/year of LNG and a possible second phase of 12 Mt/year of export capacity if approved. Once in operation, the project should receive and liquefy natural gas from the United States, mainly for export to LNG markets in Asia.
The company is also developing the 3.5 Mt/year Vista Pacífico LNG project in the Mexican state of Sinaloa. At the end of 2024, Mexico had plans for a total of seven liquefaction plants for LNG exports with a total capacity of 62 Mt/year (83 bcm/year).
