Sempra breaks ground on 3 Mt/year Port Arthur LNG project in Texas (US)

Sempra Infrastructure has announced the groundbreaking ceremony for the Port Arthur LNG Phase 1 project under development in Jefferson County, Texas, US.  The project is designed to include two natural gas liquefaction trains, two LNG storage tanks and associated facilities, with a capacity of approximately 13 Mt/year. The project is being developed by Sempra Infrastructure, a 70%-owned subsidiary of the US LNG developer Sempra, and it expects to start commercial operations in 2027 and 2028 for train 1 and 2, respectively.

In September 2023, Sempra sold 42% of indirect, non-controlling interest in the phase 1 of the project to investment management company KKR, with Sempra retaining a controlling 28% and ConocoPhillips owning the remaining 30%.

In September 2023, Sempra also received a permit from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for the Port Arthur LNG Phase 2 expansion project, that includes the addition of two liquefaction trains (trains 3 and 4) each capable of producing up to 6.5 Mt/year of LNG, potentially increasing the total liquefaction capacity of the facility to approximately 26 Mt/year.
