Sembcorp plans to develop a 1 GW solar-plus-storage plant in Indonesia

Sembcorp Industries (Sembcorp), PT PLN Batam and PT Trisurya Mitra Bersama (Suryagen) have signed an exclusive joint development agreement (JDA) to develop a 1 GWp solar and energy storage project in the Batam, Bintan and Karimun (BBK) region in Indonesia. The power generated onsite will supply local communities and is proposed to be transmitted via subsea cables into Singapore. Indonesia is committed to achieving a renewable energy mix of 23% by 2025. Under the recently published 2021-2030 PLN Electricity Procurement Plan, up to 4.7 GW of new solar capacity has been announced by 2030.

In July 2021, Sunseap Group signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Badan Pengusahaan Batam (BP Batam) to build a floating solar-plus-storage plant on the Duriangkang reservoir on the Indonesian island of Batam. The project will have an installed capacity of 2.2 GW combined with a storage capacity of 4,000 MWh. The solar plant is expected to generate 2.6 TWh/year of electricity, which will be consumed on Batam Island and exported to Singapore 50 km away using a subsea cable. Construction is slated to start in 2022 and should be completed in 2024.
