The Singaporean company Sembcorp Industries has won a tender from the government agency JTC Corporation for a 117 MW solar power project on Jurong Island (southern Singapore). The solar project is currently the largest awarded by a public sector agency in Singapore. For the project, Sembcorp will solarise vacant land and rooftops of five buildings on the island.
In November 2023, Sembcorp announced that it would invest about SGD10.5bn (US$7.8bn), or about 75% of its total investments in 2024-2028, to support renewables growth as part of its plans halve carbon emissions by 2028.
Singapore’s solar capacity reached 490 MW at the end of 2021 (+48% compared to 2020 and up more than tenfold from only 46 MW in 2015), representing about 4% of the island’s installed capacity. The government of Singapore targets 2 GW of solar PV by 2030.
