Sembcorp Industries has begun commercial operations at its 600 MW hydrogen-ready combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant on Jurong Island, Singapore (Sembcorp press release, 28/10/2026). The plant entered service after Sembcorp completed the required market registration procedures and secured full Generation Registered Facility (GRF) status from the Singapore Energy Market Company, according to the company’s announcement.
Following the addition of the new facility, Sembcorp’s combined gas-fired and renewable energy portfolio in Singapore has reached 5.7 GW. “Its assets support the growing power requirements of Singapore’s data centre and semiconductor sectors”, said the company.
Singapore continues to pursue measures to safeguard its electricity supply :
- Sembcorp’s announcement comes just days after the Energy Market Authority (EMA) granted conditional approval for the Vietnam-Malaysia-Singapore (VMS) renewable electricity initiative. Developed by consortia involving Sembcorp Utilities, PTSC, TNB and PETRONAS, the regional power corridor aims to deliver up to 1.3 GW of renewable electricity to Singapore. The supply would combine offshore wind power from Vietnam with solar energy and battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Malaysia. Electricity generated in Vietnam would be transmitted via Malaysia, which would serve as both a recipient and a transit country, before being supplied to Malaysia and Singapore. Singapore has set a target of importing approximately 6 GW of low-carbon electricity by 2035, which would account for around one-third of its projected electricity demand (KEI, 27/10/2026).
- In a separate development in August 2026, Sembcorp Utilities, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sembcorp, received conditional approval from the EMA for a project to import 300 MW of renewable electricity from Peninsular Malaysia. The project comprises a 2.2 GWp floating solar facility and up to 4.3 GWh of battery storage at Linggiu Reservoir in Johor, Malaysia. Operations are expected to begin in 2029, further strengthening cross-border electricity trade between Malaysia and Singapore (KEI, 10/08/2026).
