The German company Deutsche ReGas has announced the arrival of the second floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) at its 13.5 bcm/year LNG import terminal, located in the port of Mukran, on the island of Rügen, Germany.
The FSRU Neptune, built in 2009 and with a capacity of 145,000 m3, is 50% owned by Hoegh LNG and sub-chartered by Deutsche ReGas from TotalEnergies. In May 2024, the unit left Germany’s industrial port of Lubmin, where it served the Lubmin terminal. The terminal feature another FSRU, the 174,000 m3 Energos Power FSRU, which arrived in Mukran in February 2024.
Once operational, a total of up to 13.5 bcm/year of natural gas should be fed into the German 50 km long-distance gas pipeline network via the Mukran energy terminal as the country seeks to reduce its heavy reliance on Russian gas. Germany has LNG terminals at Wilhelmshaven, Lubmin, Brunsbüttel, and Stade. In 2023, LNG terminals accounted for about 7% of total German gas imports.
