ScottishPower gets planning consent for 1.2 GW offshore wind project (UK)

The British Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) has granted planning approval to the East Anglia III offshore wind park developed by ScottishPower Renewables (part of the Iberdrola group) off the Suffolk coast in the United Kingdom. The project will account as much as 172 turbines with a combined capacity of 1,200 MW.

The project secured a price of £119/MWh (€131/MWh) through a competitive auction process run by the British government. Onshore construction is expected to start in 2021 and offshore construction in 2022. The East Anglia-3 wind project could then achieve first power generation as early as 2023 and could be commissioned by 2025. It could supply enough power to cover the consumption of 989,200 average British households.

The East Anglia project is made up of several phases: East Anglia-1 (under construction, 714 MW, 102 turbines, expected in 2020), East Anglia-1 North (in development, 800 MW), East-Anglia-2 (in development, 800 MW) and East-Anglia-3 (approved, 1,200 MW).
