Scottish Power, owned by Iberdrola, will invest GBP1.5bn (EUR1.76bn) to replace ageing turbines at the Whitelee wind park in Scotland, a project that will nearly double the capacity of the UK's largest onshore wind park (Scottish Power press release, 22/07/2026).
Under the repowering project, the site will feature 124 fewer but more advanced and higher-capacity turbines, each reaching approximately 250 m in height. As a result, installed capacity will increase from 539 MW to 1 GW, according to the press release.
The Whitelee wind project was first commissioned in 2008 with 140 turbines. It has since been expanded through two extension phases, with Phase 1 adding 36 turbines and Phase 2 a further 39, bringing the total number of turbines to 215.
A planning application is expected to be submitted in December 2027, while the repowered wind park is scheduled to enter operation by 2035.
