Scotland (UK) sets a 20 GW onshore wind capacity target by 2030

Scotland (UK) has released an Onshore Wind Policy Statement in which the Scottish Government sets an onshore wind capacity target of at least 20 GW by 2030. This will represent an additional 11 GW of capacity by the end of the decade, as Scotland currently has about 9 GW of operational onshore wind.

The policy statement plans to establish an Onshore Wind Strategic Leadership Group (SLG) that will lead the delivery of the 2030 target and comprise members of government, industry, supply chain stakeholders and community groups.

Onshore wind in Scotland has achieved its second lowest overall strike price across all technologies during the latest Contract for Difference Allocation (Round 4) in July 2022, at £42.47/MWh (€48.15/MWh), which is around 45% lower than it cleared during Allocation Round 1 in 2015.

Scotland’s Hydrogen Action Plan, published earlier in December 2022, plans for a significant portion of the planned 5 GW hydrogen capacity in 2030 to be powered by new offshore wind capacity.

At the UK’s national level, onshore wind represented about 14% of the country’s installed capacity with 14.4 GW (12.7 GW for offshore wind) and 9% of its power generation with nearly 29 TWh in 2021.
